Abstract

Here,wereporttheupgradingofsheabuttertobiodieselwithhierarchicalmesoporousZSM-5zeolites(HMZeol).Sheabutterisatriglyceride(mainlyoleicandstericacid)extractedfromAfricansheatreenut.ThecatalystssynthesiswasbydesilicationofconventionalZSM-5withanaqueoussolutionofNaOH(0.3and0.4M).XRF,XRD,NH3-TPDandN2adsorptionunveiledtheeffectofdesilicationoftheparentzeolite.ThestudyinvestigatedtheeffectofNaOHconcentrationonmatrixarea,poresize,mesoporevolumeandSi/Alra-tio.HMZeolshowedsuperioractivityonbiodieselyieldwhencomparedwiththeparentZSM-5zeolite.Thecatalyticmaterialtreatedwith0.4MNaOH(0.4HMZeol)gave74%biodieselyieldat5:1methanol/oilmolarratio,1wt%catalyst,and200ᵒCfor3hreactiontimewhileZSM-5gave46.05%yieldunderthesamereactionconditions.Furtherincreaseinthereactiontimeto12hfor0.4HMZeol,0.3HMZeolandZSM-5gave82.12,79.21,and72.13%biodieselyieldrespectively.TheseresultsshowedthathierarchicalmesoporousHZSM-5isapromisingsolidacidcatalystforbiodieselproductionviamethanolysis.
