Abstract

Energy generation and distribution are major challenges in the country, consequently many users rely on private generation plants which are not only expensive but have negative impact on the environment health and wellbeing of the people. There is need for search for alternative energy sources and more energy efficient buildings which constitute a major consumer of energy. This thesis Head Office Building for Skye Bank Plc Lagos, Nigeria therefore explored energy efficiency in the design of commercial building using the qualitative research method. The research objectives included conduction of case studies to identify spatial requirements and design criteria of a bank head office, identification of energy efficient principles, examination of the application of energy efficient principles in the design of corporate buildings, provision of energy efficient solution to solve energy challenges observed in the present head office facilities, and lastly proposal of a befitting energy efficient head office design for the bank. Secondary data was obtained through literature review while primary data was obtained from five case studies. Data analysis was by content analysis. Findings which included the functional spaces within the bank head office, approaches adopted by other architects in the design of office buildings, alternative m and lastly practical applications of energy efficiency principles in commercial building provided information which guided the design of the proposed head office building.
