Abstract

In earlier times in Nigeria various places were used as venues where disputes were resolved (the village square, kings palace), it was an important affair as all members of the community gather together to hear the arguments from both sides (pros and cons) as well as the solution to the issues. It was a customary practice and a source of pride to the people. It was the foundation for the community. In recent times however, the courthouse created as an official location of dispute resolution, is disconnect from the people whom it serves. Citizens, unless obligated have no need to visit the courthouse, very few court spaces are known to people or as public destination. This is partly as a result of inaccessible designs. This thesis will focus on the usefulness of the courthouse and as well as ways to improving and accommodating public access, while the design will attempt to address the inaccessibly of functional spaces through an efficient circulation system and proper space layout.
