Abstract

The last few decades have shifted the police institution from a “force” to a service oriented organization. Community policing is perhaps the most popular and the most demanded policing method among the law enforcement authorities, and has been implemented by many countries in recent years. However, implementations of community policing programmes have always been problematic. This study is a modest attempt to assess the need to establish community policing, the challenges that undermine it, and the implications of effective community policing in Nigeria. This study relies on primary and documentary method of study. The finding shows that the establishment of community policing will be a solution to the problem of crime in Nigeria. The study recommends among others, that the Federal Government of Nigeria should provide adequate funds for the effective running of community policing in Nigeria. The research concludes that the community should be ready and willing to collaborate with the police to ensure effective running of community policing as obtainable in other developed and developing countries of the world such as the United States of America, United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Pakistan and in other countries
