The knowledge of soil properties underlying shallow-marine areas is vital for the understanding of the general behaviour of soils in the region for recommendation, design and construction of coastal structures, like quay walls among others. This research work focused on the subsurface investigation involving the geotechnical characterisation of soil in selected shallow marine areas in Lagos and Port Harcourt in southern Nigeria. Percussion rigs were used for both the on-land and over-the-water borings. Eight (8) geotechnical borings were carried out in Lagos, while a total number of seven (7) on-land and six (6) over-the-water borings in Port Harcourt, to a depth of 30/40 m each below existing ground level and sea bed respectively. Percussion drilling technique was used for soil samples collection and in-situ testing. The geotechnical characterisation of the disturbed and undisturbed soil samples was carried out using laboratory tests. The tests conducted include grain size analysis, consistency limits (Atterberg limits), unit weight determination, unconsolidated-undrained triaxial, consolidation tests and water chemical tests. Stratigraphy of onland borings showed soft fibrous organic clay layer, underlain by silty sands and clays. Beneath this layer to the end of boring is well-graded sands and gravels. The borings over-water had a very soft to soft organic clay layer underlain by silty-sand, being underlain by clays, poorly-graded sands and well-graded sands to the limits of the borings. Deep foundation systems employing reinforced concrete piles to depths (coinciding with the sandy horizon) were recommended for the on-land piles, reinforced hollow cylindrical steel piles for piers and piles for offshore landing jetties, and concrete sheet piles for shore protection (quay wall) works. This will form the ballasts for mooring of cargo vessels for conveying oil and gas final products and for other commercial purposes. This study provided a comparison of the geotechnical characteristics of coastal soils in the shallowmarine areas of Lagos and Port Harcourt and how they influence quay wall design and construction. It also provided preliminary information that may be useful for planning future quay wall design and construction, especially in Southern Nigeria.
