Abstract

Social sustainability is a concept that has been somewhat ignored or glazed over for the past few years. The four main indicators of the concept being; amenities and infrastructure, social and culture, voice and influence and space to grow. One of the ways to ensure a socially sustainable neighborhood is by having community center; this is a building where residents of the community can come to learn, relax and interact amongst themselves. The aim of this study is to propose a community center in Sagamu, Ogun state, to achieve social sustainability in the area. In doing this, the historical antecedents of the community will be reflected as well as creating a vibrant and functional space for commercial, recreational and social interaction. In order to achieve this, the study has used existing literature and information from case studies to examine the historical and current planning measures in the design of a community center. The study shows the need for a center where people can have social networking and create social cohesion in the neighborhood, hence the need for a community center.
