Abstract
Literature avers that Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (SMEs) are crucial to developing states such as Nigeria. As essential as SMEs are in the success stories of developing nations, many of them happen to fail within the first five years of their existence. Franco & Haase (2010) reported that 66 percent of young entrepreneurs fail to make an impact in the first year of their operations, with the remaining 43 percent struggling to have a foothold on the market. Traditional premonitions on factors responsible for the failures of entrepreneurs attribute a lack of financial capacities while disregarding non-financial indicators such as competence levels of entrepreneurs. The significant issue, as disclosed by Ahmed et al. (2003), is that most entrepreneurs are unaware of the substantial role in competences in improving the success rate of their enterprise. Although, there is a shortage of literature in sub-Saharan Africa on how entrepreneurial competencies affect the performance of a firm. Given this, the current research focuses on bridging this gap by investigating how entrepreneurial competencies affect the performance of firms, studying small and medium scale enterprises in southwest Nigeria.
