Abstract

The United Nations has recognized gender-based violence against women as a global health and development issue and a lot of policies, public education, and action programs aimed at preventing gender-based violence have been undertaken around the world. Gender-based primarily affects women and girls globally; one in three women has experienced violence in their lifetimes. In conflict settings, women and girls tend to be more vulnerable to the dangers of gender-based violence. There are various forms of gender-based violence and it has severe effects on women and girls especially on their psychological and reproductive health. One of the United Population Fund’s mandates is to prevent gender-based violence. This study looks into gender-based violence in internally displaced persons camps on women and girls; the policies that United Nations Population Fund has implemented to prevent gender-based violence, its effects and possible ways to prevent gender-based violence in internally displaced persons camp. The above-mentioned therefore, necessitated this study, which used Theory of Femicide as the framework for analysis. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design and utilises qualitative method of data collection: in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The findings of the study reveals challenges that creates areas for recommendations such as the necessary need for investigating and creating awareness against the dangers of gender-based violence, for countries to appropriately implement laws at all levels pertaining gender-based violence and their judicial systems hold offenders responsible. In conclusion, there is need for both the federal government and international organization to help prevent gender-based violence in internally displaced persons camp.
