Abstract

This study investigates noise control strategies in soundstages with a view to improving sound isolation in the design of a film and television studio. The study uses a mixed-method research design to examine the noise control strategies employed in these studios and their impact. Analysis of the questionnaire, thematic analysis of interviews with soundstage operators in four film studios and five television houses and a literature review was conducted. The findings reveal the utilization of various noise control strategies, including soundproofing measures, zoning, and space design, aimed at enhancing sound quality and optimizing recording conditions. The interviews demonstrate a positive association between effective noise control measures and enhanced productivity, with benefits such as improved focus, more accessible communication, time and resource savings, and reduced retakes. The study contributes to bridging the knowledge gap in the Nigerian film industry by emphasizing the importance of noise control practices in studio design and their relevance to production efficiency. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the study's scope was limited to soundstage operators in Lagos, suggesting the need for further research with a larger sample size and including studios from other regions to understand noise control strategies in Nigeria comprehensively. Additionally, future studies could incorporate quantitative research methods to complement the qualitative findings. By promoting effective noise control practices, this research aims to facilitate the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry.
