Abstract

Sustainable development is a goal pursued on a global scale and being realised across all sectors, including universities. However, this demands proactive management on the part of these universities in order to apply sustainable measures. This study aimed at determining the magnitude to which the selected universities in Ado-Oda/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria, have incorporated sustainability concepts into their facility management. A qualitative case study research design was utilised, wherein two interviews were conducted with facility managers from Covenant University (CU) and Bells University of Technology. Interviewees were purposefully selected from the two universities. Throughout this paper, conventional content analysis was used for data analysis. The interview guide contained questions about the types of buildings in the universities, sustainable facilities management (SFM) strategies being used by the universities, factors influencing the adoption of SFM strategies at the universities, and challenges to the adoption of SFM practices. Results from the analysis indicate that the universities have partially implemented SFM practices. The common practice includes energy management. The universities have also done well in waste management. The universities cited legislation and cost savings as the main drivers for the adoption of SFM practices. While this is the case, the universities have also met quite a number of challenges in their quest to implement SFM, like resource constraints, design constraints, and a lack of knowledge about SFM, among others. The study recommends the development of a system for monitoring and evaluating the progress of sustainable facilities management practices in universities in Ado-Oda/Ota LGA, Ogun State, Nigeria.
