Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to examine the nature and challenges of local government administration in Nigeria using the localist theory as framework of analysis. With a heavy reliance on secondary data and theory to practice approach employed, the paper presented illuminating discourse and underscored the features of the localist theory that could change for good the nature of local government administration in Nigeria. The effective practice of new managerialism; devolved model of governance anchored on qualitative service delivery and reforms package inherent in the theory encapsulating financial buoyancy and stronger local democracy offer tremendous appeal to overcoming the challenges of local government administration in Nigeria. Other suggestions proffered are also capable of repositioning local government councils in Nigeria for effective performance
