Abstract

Core areas of traditional cities often loose their significance as attention shifts to more modern parts of the city. This results in loss of capital, investment and the more prosperous residents leading to decay. This paper investigated the causes of decay in a traditional district of Cairo, Egypt-Zayedda Zenab and evolved a proposal aimed at its revitalisation. Data were obtained during a study visit by a multidisciplinary team consisting of mature international students on the Master of Architecture: Housing Studies programme of the Centre for Architectural Research and development Overseas (CARDO) of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. The proposal identifies the need to harness community assets like existing institutions and faculties while introducing redevelopments which will attract capital investment and combat crime.
