Abstract
The Yankatsari model village project was evolved as a means of aggregating scattered rural settlements in selected villages in Kano State. This was in order for the government to provide basic infrastructure to rural residents in an economic and sustainable way. Thus the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Lagos was invited to provide the research and development base for this project. In collaboration with the Kano State Housing Corporation, Kano, design prototypes incorporating salient features of residents’ living patterns were evolved. A model was built which used innovative building materials and construction gadgets developed locally. This paper, reports on the evolutionary process of this model housing in Yankatsari, Kano.
