Abstract

In this paper, we carry out a study of the morphological blockage capacity of the agentive –eur suffixation in French. In order to do this, four other agentive suffixes i. e –ant, -ier, -iste and –oir are considered to be able to morphologically compete with the suffix –eur, taking into account their individual syntactic and semantic properties. In carrying out the study, we make use of dictionary-based corpus containing a large number of agentive nouns formed with the use of the five suffixes. In the final analysis, it is to be noted that despite some resistance from each of the four competing suffixes, the French agentive suffix –eur, demonstrate a strong capacity to block potential formations by its morphological competitors.
