Abstract

The telecommunications industry (GSM) is experiencing a robust growth on a global scale. Advancement in this technology has removed long queues at phone booths, provided the opportunity to call anywhere, anytime and for as long as one wants with little or no expenses. Telecom service providers promote their services by giving out bonuses such as free midnight calls and cheaper call rates thereby increasing the usage of phones. This attendant increase in phone usage has generated concerns about its safety due to suspected health hazards that may be associated with exposure to mobile phone radiation. In this work we observed that exposure of experimental rats to mobile phone radiation for four (4) hours daily for two (2) months could increase the Aspartate Aminotransaminase (AST) activity as well as decrease the plasma globulin levels etc.and alter the arrangement of cells of the brain tissue of the animals when a histological study was conducted. The findings of this research are being reported to create an awareness of the danger that may be associated with long exposure to mobile phones.
