abstract: The primary level of education serves as a foundation to an individual’s level of contribution to the
society. School choice relates to the selection and preference of one school over the other. The concept
has gained lots of attention in the bid to enhance and improve the educational sector through human
capital development in countries. This research focuses on exploring the socio- economic determinants
in choosing primary schools for children by parents. With a sample size determined from selected areas
in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, the study employs the use of descriptive statics and the Structural
Equation Model (SEM) to examine the influence of moral values, location, academic performance and
socio-economic in the deciding what primary school parents take their children to. Findings showed that
academic performance was the most significant of the factors parents consider in primary school choice.
Recommendations include enhancing academic performance in schools through the government
providing enabling environment for schools to perform well and also allocate funds for teachers’ training
to improve the quality of education.
