A. creator: Akintokun, Aderonke subject: QH Natural history subject: QH301 Biology subject: QR Microbiology description: There is a need to carry out regular microbiological analysis of packaged sachet water (PSW) sold in Nigeria to determine whether they comply with drinking-water quality standards. One hundred and fifty three PSW samples from fifty-one packaged sachet water facilities (PWMFs) in Abeokuta were collected from retail outlets between April – July, 2014. Samples were analyzed for Escherichia coli using standard culture media. Latex agglutination serological test; sequencing of 16S rRNA gene and sequence similarity analysis yielded E. coli O157:H7 from two PSW (1.32%) from one PWMF (1.96%). Both E. coli O157:H7 isolates were Shiga toxin (stx1) positive but stx2 negative. The two E. coli O157:H7 strains exhibited different resistance patterns to ten (10) antibiotics belonging to seven (7) different classes. Each E. coli O157:H7 strain showed resistance to more than two classes of antibiotics with MIC ≥ 8 μg/ml. This paper showed that the not all packaged sachet water analyzed in this study are fit for drinking, and can even be source of multidrug resistant and Shiga, toxin-producing E. coli. date: 2023 type: Article type: PeerReviewed format: application/pdf language: en identifier: http://eprints.covenantuniversity.edu.ng/18254/1/SHIGA%2C%20TOXIN-PRODUCING%20ESCHERICHIA.pdf identifier: Ajibola, Abiola and Shittu, Olufunke and Oluwasanya, Abidemi Ojo4 and Akinduti, P.
