The evolution of ecclesiastical architecture has led to the growth of church buildings in Abuja, Nigeria. However, with increased capacity and expanding congregations, the imperative to ensure user comfort within these spaces has become more pronounced. Building design, encompassing various aspects plays a pivotal role in shaping users' experiences in public and private spaces. Acoustics, a crucial determinant of space usability, presents unique challenges in creating optimal sound environments. Architects and acousticians have strived to develop innovative solutions to control and balance sound, enhancing speech intelligibility and overall acoustic comfort. Despite significant progress, challenges persist, underscoring the need for tailored acoustic design strategies based on building types. This study investigated acoustics in church building facilities with a view to incorporating the findings in the design of a church auditorium in Abuja, Nigeria. The study utilized stratified random sampling to select churches in Abuja, Nigeria; North America and the rest of Africa. It employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches to collect primary and secondary data. Data was collected from fifty-five retrieved questionaries from the users of the three churches which is considered satisfactory being higher than the minimum (calculated) sample size. The findings indicate that the implementation of acoustic design strategies in the local churches was high. Consequently, a significant number of users expressed dissatisfaction with the acoustic conditions in the churches. However, the use of polished and smooth surfaces in some churches contributed to a fair number of satisfied users. The study highlights the importance of optimal seating locations and the integration of sound reinforcement systems for improved user comfort. Furthermore, it emphasizes the impact of seating location and the use of sound-absorbing materials on acoustic comfort, as well as the role of sound reinforcement systems in enhancing speech intelligibility. These findings provide valuable insights for the design and planning of church auditoriums, aiming to enhance acoustics thereby improving user comfort and satisfaction.
