Abstract
Beyond the conventional approach of delivering public services, the adoption of digital mechanisms in delivering these services have been advocated for. This is with the aim of improving the manner at which public services are delivered to the general public. INEC is not left out in the search for a better way to provide quality service through digital technology and they introduce new technologies over the years in carrying out their activities. However, voter impersonation, duplicate registrations, overcrowding at registration centres and inflated results figures during collation are among the problems that have plagued the election system. In light of this, it becomes imperative to assess the impact of digital technology on INEC activities specifically in the registration of voters and distribution of voter’s card. The scope of study was Lagos state, specifically Alimosho Local Government. The Technology Organisation Environment framework served as the theoretical analysis framework for this investigation. Both secondary and primary sources of data were used in this study to gather information. Based on the study's research questions and structured interview, the data were thematically evaluated. This study used a case study research design. The population of study was 25 staffs of the Alimosho Local Government INEC office and the sample size was 5 staffs selected using the purposive sampling technique. The result showed that digital technology has a positive effect of the registration of voters and distribution of voters’ card in Alimosho Local government but they still experience challenges like shortage in digital devices and staffs as well as delay in fixing and replacing damaged devices. The study concluded that digital technology has had a positive impact on the registration of voters and distribution of voters’ card in Alimosho Local Government between 2015 to 2022. The study recommends that INEC should provide more devices to the local government and adequate staffing and training should be prioritized to ensure the smooth operation and management of digital systems.
