Abstract
Abeokuta, Ogun State, is one indigenous city in Nigeria with a rich cultural history that is tied amongst other things to the existence of a special rock, Olumo Rock. A source of folklores, legends, and myths, it is even the basis for the city’s anthem. Currently, the Olumo Rock Tourist Complex, as managed by the Ogun State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, comprises of an Art Gallery, Elevators to aid getting to the rock’s summit, Cafeteria, Multipurpose Hall, as well as car park space. In seeking to maximize the tourism potential based on the historic significance of the rock, a theme park is proposed as a good strategy to educate as well as entertain tourists from different parts of the world, and thus preserve cultural heritage. To achieve this aim, the facilities that tourists yearn for in theme parks were identified and case studies carried out. The strategies to enhance safety in the theme park were also explored. A design was proposed which addresses safety concerns in theme parks and focuses on the education of tourists on the rich culture of Egba people.
