Abstract

Issues of security have continued to top discourses in the Nigerian state. This heightened interest in the subject matter can be largely traced to the proliferation of dissident groupings across the length and breadth of the Nigerian state. These societal misfits apart from truncating peace and public order have contributed maximally to the under-development of the Nigerian state. While these ugly experiences have lingered and accentuated, the North-Eastern part of the nation seems worst hit especially Taraba state which has continued to groan under the weight of banditry. These bandits often have a tripartite objective which is to kill, steal and destroy. Since uncommon situations demand uncommon solutions, community security organizations have been set up to tackle this menace. The dissertation therefore appraises the rising threats of banditry from the lenses of community security in Karim-Lamido local Government Area of Taraba State. The study employed a quantitative research methodology and administered questionnaires to respondents analysed the obtained responses, it was revealed that abduction /kidnappings, rape, periodic attacks on villages and other rural dwellers was the nature of banditry in the state and the activities of bandits in the local government area affected their standard of living and socio-economic development of the local government area. Hence, it recommends that there should be a synergy between the formal policing structures and the community security organizations in other to successfully stem the tide of banditry in the local government area.
